In this article
Shopify POS hardware starts with a phone or tablet plus a card reader. A stand, receipt printer, barcode scanner and cash drawer are optional and depend on how you sell. Shopify’s hardware store lists a Tap & Chip card reader at $49 and a POS Terminal at $349 (the page shows “$” only, checked October 22, 2026).
Which kit for which shop
- Market stall or pop-up: your phone or tablet and a card reader. Shopify’s hardware page also describes Tap to Pay, which turns a smartphone into a checkout. Tap & Chip reader: $49 (listed for the United States only).
- Small shop counter: add a receipt printer, as Shopify’s setup advice for a permanent location does. OmniLink printer: $289. Eddy tablet stand: $149.
- Busy retail counter: POS Terminal ($349) with an OmniLink printer ($289), barcode scanner ($209) and cash drawer ($139). The drawer plugs into the printer.
- Warehouse or stockroom scanning: Shopify’s setup for multiple stores or a warehouse includes a scanner. The Zebra DS2278 with cradle is listed as cordless, at $299.
Skip the extras if you sell at events only. A phone and a reader are the whole setup there.

Key takeaways

- Hardware does not need POS Pro. POS Pro is a separate add-on for staff, inventory and customer tools.
How we checked Shopify POS hardware
This guide uses public pages only: Shopify’s hardware store, Shopify’s POS hardware and POS pricing pages, and the Help Center pages on supported hardware, getting started, card readers, receipt printers and the POS Hub. No account was opened and no device was tested. Prices are the list prices the hardware store showed on the day of the check, written with “$” and no country because the page names none.
Checked: October 22, 2026.
What hardware do I need for Shopify POS?
Hardware for Shopify POS starts with a supported phone or tablet and a card reader. Shopify’s Help Center sorts the rest by store type, and each step up adds one or two devices.
| Store type | Shopify’s recommended setup | Hardware store items that fit |
|---|---|---|
| Pop-up, events, part-time sales | A supported device and a card reader | Tap & Chip reader ($49) |
| Permanent retail location | Device, card reader and receipt printer | POS Terminal ($349) or Tap & Chip reader ($49), OmniLink printer ($289), Eddy stand ($149) |
| Multiple stores or a warehouse | Device, card reader, receipt printer, barcode scanner and cash drawer | POS Terminal ($349), OmniLink printer ($289), Engage 2D G2 scanner ($209), CD4 cash drawer ($139) |
For events, a phone is enough on its own with Tap to Pay, and our guide to Shopify mobile POS covers that route. Our list of POS for pop-up shops compares the field for stalls.
What does each piece of Shopify POS hardware do?
Each device handles one job at the counter. Shopify’s supported-hardware page groups them into card readers, device stands, receipt printers, barcode scanners, cash drawers, label printers and mPOP units.
| Device | What it does | Example in the hardware store |
|---|---|---|
| Card reader | Takes tap, chip and swipe payments | Tap & Chip reader (“Bluetooth and USB connectivity”), POS Terminal (countertop, with customer display), Victa Mobile (handheld that also scans barcodes) |
| Tablet stand | Holds the tablet at the counter | Eddy Tablet Stand (“350° rotation and security lock options”) |
| Receipt printer | Prints receipts | OmniLink (Epson) and Star TSP143IV-UEWB |
| Barcode scanner | Reads product barcodes | HP Engage 2D G2, Zebra DS2208, Zebra DS2278 (cordless, with cradle) |
| Cash drawer | Holds cash; plugs into a compatible receipt printer | Star CD4, 14 inch and 16 inch |
| POS Hub | Connects USB devices to the tablet by wire | Shopify POS Hub |
| Label printer | Prints barcode labels | Zebra ZD220 and ZD421 |
| mPOP | Star printer and cash drawer unit with a scanner, models 39655110 (black) and 39655010 (white) | Sold by third-party retailers only, per the Help Center |
Shopify’s Help Center says to connect USB hardware through the POS Hub for the most reliable connection. The page lists the Tap & Chip reader, receipt printers and several scanners as hub devices. Read the Help Center page on the POS Hub for the full list.

How much does Shopify POS hardware cost?

| Item | List price (“$”) |
|---|---|
| Tap & Chip Card Reader | $49 |

| Verifone Victa Mobile (handheld) | $399 |

Worked example: three kits
Hypothetical shops, using the list prices above. Each kit assumes you already own the phone or tablet. Tax, shipping and your Shopify plan are not included.
| Kit | Items | Arithmetic | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Market stall | Tap & Chip reader | $49 | $49 |
| Small counter | Tap & Chip reader, Eddy stand, OmniLink printer | $49 + $149 + $289 | $487 |
| Busy counter | POS Terminal, Eddy stand, OmniLink printer, Engage scanner, CD4 cash drawer | $349 + $149 + $289 + $209 + $139 | $1,135 |
Adding a POS Hub at $69 to the busy counter makes $1,204. The sums use list prices only. A monthly plan comes on top, and our page on what Shopify POS costs in total covers it.
Is third-party hardware compatible with Shopify POS?
Often yes, if the model counts as Shopify POS compatible hardware, meaning it is on Shopify’s supported list. Shopify’s hardware page says that in most cases your own tablet, phone and existing hardware will work. Its compatibility page adds that all listed devices work with Shopify POS and that “verified” devices were tested for reliability, durability and security.
- Scanners: the Help Center says most HID barcode scanners are supported and can be bought from third-party sellers.
- Receipt printers: the Epson T20 and T88 series and the Star mC-Print3 are listed as available through third-party sellers.
- Card readers: an external card terminal is listed as available anywhere, but payment goes through your own terminal provider, not Shopify Payments.
- Warranty: in the United States and Canada, third-party warranty claims go to the manufacturer.
- Discontinued readers: the Chip & Swipe reader ended on September 15, 2025 in the US, and POS Go ends on May 26, 2027. Shopify names the Victa Mobile, Tap to Pay and the Tap & Chip reader as replacements.
Check any device against the Help Center list of supported hardware before you pay for it. The page links to the model lists for each device type and region.
Where can I buy Shopify POS hardware?
Buy from Shopify’s hardware store if it has a version for your country. Shopify’s Help Center lists 16 hardware stores in 15 countries (Canada has an English and a French store) and names Australia, Belgium, Canada (English and French), Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Singapore, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States, and says availability varies by country. The store’s own region picker showed 18 countries on October 22, 2026, so check it for yours.
- The store is hardware.shopify.com, with a version for each country.
- Outside those countries, buy supported models from a verified third-party retailer. The Help Center names CDW as a Shopify partner that resells Shopify hardware.
- Shopify’s Help Center gives a 30-day return window for hardware bought from Shopify, counted from delivery.
- The Tap & Chip reader is listed for the United States only. Other countries use readers such as the WisePad 3, POS Terminal or Victa Mobile, depending on the country.
The Help Center page on getting started with hardware links to the store for each country.
How do I set up Shopify POS hardware?
Set up the device first, then the reader, then the extras. These steps come from Shopify’s Help Center. Menu names can change, so follow the labels in your version of the app.
- Use a supported phone or tablet. Shopify POS runs on iOS and Android only.
- Connect the Tap & Chip reader over Bluetooth. Turn it on with the power button. In Shopify POS, tap the connectivity icon, then “+ Add hardware”, “Card reader” and “Tap & Chip”. Press and hold the power button for 4 seconds and release when the lights flash back and forth in blue. Tap “Connect” when the reader appears under “Available card readers”. Other readers have their own Help Center pages.
- Connect the receipt printer by LAN, or by USB through the POS Hub, which Shopify recommends. With more than one printer, tap the connectivity icon, tap the printer under “Hardware” and turn on “Default receipt printer”. “Test receipt printer” sits in the same place.
- Plug a USB barcode scanner into a USB-A port of the hub. If Shopify POS detects it as a keyboard, tap the connectivity icon, tap the keyboard entry, choose “Device type” and select “Barcode scanner”.
- Check your devices in the Shopify admin under Sales channels, Point of Sale, Devices. The device details page shows the location of each device.
Do I need POS Pro to use Shopify POS hardware?
No. Shopify’s POS pricing page lists access to POS hardware among the features included in every plan. POS Pro is a separate add-on at $89 per location per month, billed yearly (US, as of October 2026), for staff roles, inventory tools and customer profiles. Our guide to POS Lite versus POS Pro covers the plan split, and the page on selling online and in a shop with Shopify covers how the pieces fit.
