Shopify POS Lite vs POS Pro: Features and Price Compared

POS Lite vs POS Pro

Choose Shopify POS Lite for one counter or a pop-up with a few staff, and POS Pro for a permanent shop with many staff, exchanges or several locations. In this Shopify POS Lite vs POS Pro comparison, Lite comes with every paid plan, and Pro adds $89 a month per location (US dollars, as of October 2026).

Choose POS Lite if

You sell from one counter, a market stall or a pop-up, and the owner or a few admin-level staff ring up sales. Lite takes in-person payments, syncs inventory with your online store and has no separate fee. From $25 a month on the Basic plan, monthly billing (as of October 2026).

Skip it if you need to stop a cashier from issuing refunds, or take exchanges at any location.

Choose POS Pro if

You run a permanent shop with several cashiers, stock moving between locations, or customers who buy online and collect in store. Pro adds POS roles, POS-only staff, exchanges, stock transfers and pickup tools. From $114 a month for one location on Basic: $25 plan plus $89 Pro (as of October 2026).

Skip it if you are a solo seller or run a seasonal pop-up: $89 a month per location buys features you may never open.

What is Shopify POS Lite?

Shopify POS Lite is the set of in-person selling features that comes with any paid Shopify plan at no extra cost, according to Shopify’s Help Center (checked October 2026). Shopify’s pricing pages now call it “casual in-person selling”. This guide keeps the name POS Lite because that is the term merchants search for.

Per the Help Center, both Lite and Pro include payment hardware integration, a customizable smart grid, customer profiles, multi-location inventory, email and SMS receipts, gift cards, offline cash payments, refunds and cash tracking. Lite is not free in itself: it needs a paid plan. Shopify’s pricing page also lists current plans and prices.

What is Shopify POS Pro?

Shopify POS Pro is a paid add-on for retail locations. The Help Center describes it as an add-on that unlocks extra features for brick-and-mortar businesses, and Shopify’s pricing page says it is for “physical storefronts”. It adds staff permissions and unlimited POS-only staff, exchanges and order cancellations, saved carts, pickup and delivery options, stock transfers, daily sales reports and custom printed receipts (Help Center, checked October 2026).

Shopify recommends Pro for businesses with a lot of foot traffic, multiple tiers of staff or a large product catalog (POS pricing page FAQ, checked October 2026). Our deeper look at the app is in our Shopify POS review.

How much does Shopify POS Pro cost compared with POS Lite?

POS Pro costs $89 a month for each location, on top of your Shopify plan; POS Lite adds nothing to the plan price (Shopify POS pricing page, US, checked October 2026). The same page says the total cost of Shopify POS is your plan, transaction fees and POS Pro locations.

PlanMonthlyPer month, billed yearlyMain limit
Basic (Lite included)$25$19Pricing page lists “Limited staff can access POS”

Prices checked October 2026 on Shopify’s POS pricing page and pricing page (US, USD). Introductory offers excluded.

The POS pricing FAQ says POS Pro is “billed yearly”, while the Help Center says Basic, Grow and Advanced can choose monthly or yearly Pro billing. Neither page gives a different yearly rate.

Worked example: one shop versus three locations (hypothetical)

Assumptions: monthly billing for the Shopify plan, list prices from the table above, Pro at $89 per location, no introductory offers, and no transaction fees (fees depend on your plan and card type, so they are left out).

StoreLite everywherePro where usedExtra for Pro
One shop, Basic plan$25$25 + $89 = $114$89
Three locations, Grow plan, Pro on all three$65$65 + 3 x $89 = $332$267
Three locations, Grow plan, Pro on the flagship only$65$65 + $89 = $154$89

Pro is priced per location, so the third row is the cheapest way to get roles and exchanges where the volume is.

Do POS Lite and POS Pro differ on staff accounts and permissions?

Yes. POS Lite has no POS roles and no POS-only staff, and POS Pro has both (Shopify Help Center, checked October 2026). On both tiers each staff member who has POS access gets a unique PIN.

  • Lite: only staff with both POS and Shopify admin access can reach Lite locations. POS roles do not apply to them, so they have full Lite access and you cannot restrict them.
  • Pro: POS-only staff can log in to Pro locations, and you assign each one a custom role. Permissions come from roles, never from individual toggles. Shopify’s pricing page lists unlimited staff access on Pro.
  • Mixed setups: if one person can sign in to both a Pro and a Lite location, their role limits apply only at the Pro location. A role that blocks returns will not stop that person at the Lite location.

Shopify words the Lite limit in different ways. The POS pricing page says “Limited staff can access POS” on Basic and lists “Unlimited POS logins” among the Grow and Advanced highlights, and the main pricing page lists admin staff accounts (Grow up to 5, Advanced up to 15, Plus unlimited). Because Lite staff need admin access, our reading is that your plan’s admin staff-account count is the practical ceiling on Lite. Confirm in your own admin before you hire.

Better for: Pro, once more than one person handles cash and you want to limit refunds or discounts.

Does POS Pro have better inventory tools than POS Lite?

Yes, for stores with more than one place to keep stock. Lite includes multi-location inventory. Pro adds tracking and adjusting stock, and receiving and fulfilling stock transfers (Help Center). Shopify’s pricing page also lists inventory counts, purchase orders and low stock alerts under Pro.

Stocky, Shopify’s older inventory app, is gone. Shopify’s Help Center says Stocky is no longer available as of August 31, 2026, and that it was delisted from the App Store on February 2, 2026. The page does not say Stocky was part of POS Pro. It tells merchants to manage inventory in Shopify admin and Shopify POS, and that you keep read-only access to export data for at least 90 days.

Better for: Pro when stock moves between shops; Lite when one location holds everything.

Which tier handles omnichannel selling and orders?

Both sell online and in person from one Shopify back office, and Pro handles more order types. Lite covers returns at the original purchase location (POS pricing page). Pro adds exchanges and returns at any location, order cancellations, saving and emailing carts, ship to home, ship and carry out, pickup in store and local delivery (Help Center).

Better for: Pro if customers buy online and collect in store, or return an online order at a shop.

How do reports and customer profiles compare?

Lite reports come from your Shopify plan, and Shopify’s main pricing page lists 200+ real-time reports among core features. Pro adds daily sales reports and in-app retail analytics (Help Center), and Shopify’s marketing names “professional retail reports”. Shopify also gives Pro “rich” customer profiles with lifetime value and loyalty insights, against “simple” profiles on Lite.

Better for: Pro for a manager who checks each shop every day; Lite when the main admin reports are enough.

What about hardware and payments?

Hardware and card rates do not change which tier you can use, but the warranty does: Pro hardware has a 2-year warranty and Lite hardware 1 year (Help Center). Shopify’s hardware and POS pages we read list no prices, so check the hardware page before you budget.

Shopify Payments charges depend on your plan and the card type, and in-person rates are shown in your admin under Settings, then Payments. Rates are not listed on the POS pages we read, so we do not quote them. Shopify Payments and its hardware are available only in select countries.

Is POS Pro worth it?

POS Pro is worth $89 a month per location when you need at least one thing Lite cannot do: restrict staff by role, take exchanges at any location, move stock between shops or run pickup in store. Without one of those, Lite does the job.

  • Pop-up, market stall or solo seller: stay on Lite.
  • One shop, owner plus one or two admin-level staff: start on Lite and upgrade when you hire a cashier you do not want to give full access.
  • One busy shop with cashiers: Pro on that location.
  • Several shops: Pro on the locations that need transfers, cross-location exchanges or pickup, Lite on the rest.

Can I switch from POS Lite to POS Pro?

Yes, per location, from the Shopify admin: Sales channels, Point of Sale, Settings, POS Pro Subscription (Help Center, checked October 2026). Only the store owner can change subscriptions.

  • Upgrading mid-cycle can be prorated. POS Pro has its own 30-day billing cycle, separate from your Shopify plan.
  • Downgrading takes effect at the end of the current cycle. On annual billing you cannot downgrade until the cycle ends.
  • All locations share one billing schedule. Monthly to annual applies immediately with proration. Annual to monthly applies at the end of the annual cycle.
  • Pro has a free 3-day trial. After a trial, a location returns to Lite at no cost unless you pick Pro.
  • You cannot move a Pro subscription between locations yourself. Shopify Support does that.

Which Shopify plan do you need for POS?

Any paid plan includes POS Lite, and POS Pro can be added to Basic, Grow, Advanced or Plus (Shopify pricing page, checked October 2026). Shopify Plus includes the first 20 POS Pro locations, and its card lists up to 200 POS Pro locations. Pick the plan for your online store first, then add Pro per location. Plan details are in our Shopify pricing plans review and our Shopify Basic plan review.

When should you consider another POS?

Look elsewhere when a per-location fee does not fit your volume or you need features Shopify does not list. See our comparisons of Shopify POS against Clover, Shopify against Lightspeed and Shopify POS against Square, or our shortlist of the best POS systems for small business.
