Taste Shopify Theme Review: Features and Limits

taste-shopify-theme-review

The Taste Shopify theme is free, made by Shopify, and aimed at speciality products and bold branding. The Theme Store lists 50% positive reviews from 14 (checked October 2026). It suits a store with strong product photos and a catalog of 11 to 100+ products. If you need deep merchandising, compare Craft or Dawn first.

Quick verdict

Taste is a free theme built around large images and brand storytelling. It is for an owner who already has a product, photos and a short catalog, in food and drink or jewelry and accessories (the two industry filters it is tagged under). Price: Free, checked October 2026.

Skip it if you sell a mass-market range that needs wide merchandising choice. Compare Craft first: 56% positive from 50 reviews on the same date.

How we reviewed Taste

This review compares Taste on five criteria:

  • Cost: the license price on the Theme Store.
  • Stated fit: tagline and the industry and catalog size filters it is tagged under.
  • Listed features: the feature list, group by group.
  • Ratings and reviews: the percentage, the split and recent review text.
  • Support and updates: support links, designer replies, current version.

Checked: the Taste listing, its reviews page, the free-themes list, the listings of three alternatives, and two Shopify Help Center pages. Not checked: we did not install the theme, build a store, run speed tests or open a paid account. Store examples were dropped because current page sources could not support them.

What is the Taste Shopify theme?

Taste is a free theme published by Shopify. Its tagline on the Shopify Theme Store listing is “Ideal for speciality products and bold branding”. The listing tags it under the Food and drink and Jewelry and accessories industry filters and the catalog size filter “Some (11-100+)”.

The listing showed version 16.1.0, released October 09, 2026, with the note “Product disclosures now only show to buyers in the jurisdictions they apply to.” The listing does not state how many presets Taste has; the reviews page is filed under one preset named “taste”. It is one of 24 free themes in the store. Our guide to the best Shopify themes covers the wider field.

Three groups matter most for a small store. Merchandising is the longest: it pairs Product options, Color swatches and Size chart with Image zoom, Image rollover and Product videos. Product discovery lists Product filtering and sorting plus Swatch filters. Marketing and conversion lists Cross-selling and Recommended products, so upsell sections are on the feature list.

The listing names these features and says nothing about how each one behaves, so this review does not rate them. Shopify’s help page on updates states that theme editor changes, such as settings and section content, carry over when you update a theme, and code edits carry over if they do not conflict. What do merchants say about Taste?

The Taste reviews page shows 50% positive from 14 reviews: 7 positive, 5 neutral, 2 negative (checked October 2026). The page reports positive reviews as a percentage and shows no star rating. These are paraphrases of the first page, with the designer’s reply where one exists.

  • December 2025: a merchant reported no Buy button below the product information. The designer replied that this points to custom code, an app or a setting,.
  • December 2025: another merchant called it “a good theme for an entry level”.
  • June 2025: a merchant liked the look but found no “Add block” under Product information. The designer replied that the option exists in a clean install and linked the help documentation.
  • June 2025: a merchant wrote “It just works. No major bugs, easily customizable, fast on mobile.”

Taste pros and cons

Pros

  • The theme license is free, so the first cost is the Shopify plan, not the theme.
  • The feature list covers Cross-selling, Recommended products, Product filtering and sorting and Mega menu.
  • Shopify publishes it. The listing showed version 16.1.0 from October 09, 2026 and a theme documentation link.
  • The designer replied to 9 of the 10 reviews on the first page.

Cons

  • 50% positive from 14 reviews is a thin record. Craft shows 56% from 50, and one more negative review lowers Taste by about 3 points (our arithmetic: 7 of 15 is 47%).
  • Reviews report a missing Buy button (December 2025), a missing “Add block” option (June 2025) and description images that do not scale on mobile (August 2025). The designer traced each to custom code, settings or the rich text editor.
  • The listing’s focus is speciality products. For a broad catalog that needs heavy merchandising, it is a weaker default (our reading).

Skip it if your products need long variant lists and wide merchandising choice. Craft or Dawn is the better first look.

We chose these three by stated reasons: Craft and Heritage rate higher than Taste, and Dawn has the longest review record. Read our Craft theme review and Dawn theme review for each. Our Refresh theme review covers another free theme with the same two listed industries, rated 38% positive from 60 reviews. The three alternatives carry no tracked link from us.

Is Taste right for your store?

  • You sell food, drink or jewelry with good photos: Taste is tagged under those industry filters. See also our picks of the best Shopify themes for food products.
  • Your catalog is close to 11 to 100+ products: that is the catalog size filter it is tagged under.
  • You need product options, swatches or a size chart: all three are on the feature list.
  • Your photos are weak or you sell many near-identical variants: pick a theme with a longer review record, such as Dawn.
  • You want to compare before you commit: the table above lists three free alternatives with their review counts.
